After successful completion of the course, students are able to summarise the history of surface engineering, to describe the principles of tribology and wear, to categorise surface modifications as well as to explain coating deposition methods.

4. Surface Modifications (Conversion of Surfaces) by:
   - mechanical
   - thermal and
   - thermo-chemical Treatments
5. Coating Deposition by:
   1) mechanical, -thermal, - thermo-mechanical, -chemical, and -electro-chemical processes
   2) Physical Vapor Depositon (PVD)
   3) Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

Lecture with PowerPoint with concomitant discussions of case studies. A corresponding exercise in the WS (308.892) allows to apply the learned practical.

Every tuesday (except April 7 and 14: Easter break) from 12:00 till 13:30.

During the semester, 4 partial exams take place. The overall grade is based on the achieved total scores. It is also possible to take an individua exam at the end of the semester (or after an appointment with the lecturer) over the entire course material.
