Aim of course

Serviceable engineering components not only rely on their bulk material properties but also on the design and characteristics of their surfaces.

"God made the bulk; the surface was invented by the devil" is an often cited statement by Wolfgang Pauli (Nobel Prize in Physics 1945).

The objectives of the course are:

  1. To combine chemistry, physics, and mechanical engineering with metallurgy and materials science/engineering to tailor the properties of the surfaces of engineering components so that their function and serviceability can be improved.
  2. To understand the basic concepts and significance of Surface Engineering.
  3. To familiarize the main types of surface modification and coating techniques.
  4. To familiarize the most important thin film and coating materials (metallic or ceramic) and their applications.

Subject of course

  1. Short history of Surface Engineering
  2. Solid surfaces, Contacts between Surfaces, Prinicples of Tribology and Wear
  3. Corrosion
  4. Surface Modifications (Conversion of Surfaces) by:
    - mechanical
    - thermal and
    - thermo-chemical Treatments
  5. Coating Deposition by:
    1) mechanical, -thermal, - thermo-mechanical, -chemical, and -electro-chemical processes
    2) Physical Vapor Depositon (PVD)
    3) Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)
