Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • analyse materials technology-related processes in steel.
  • describe the relation between microstructure of poly-crystalline materials and the resulting mechanical-technological properties (strength, toughness etc.).
  • describe classical methods of thermal and mechanical treatment of the metallic microstructure of steel.
  • design steels with requested mechanical properties.
  • summarise the classical production routes of steel.

Iron-Carbon system (phase diagram, effect of alloying elements, types of iron-base alloys, ...); microstructure-property relationship; possibilities of microstructural transformations (transformation hardening, heat treatments, recrystallization, recovery, ...); steel production
