Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • Explain the difference between crystalline and amorphous solidification
  • Name the structural features of polymers that influence the melting and/or glass transition temperature and explain the methods used during morphological characterisation
  • Describe the inequilibrium for the metastable system iron-iron carbide (Fe-Fe3C) using time-temperature conversion diagrams and discuss their application to the hardening of steel
  • Perform bending tests, which are better suited to the characterization of brittle materials than tensile tests

Teaching methods

Dilatometric determination of microstructural transformations in a steel sample

Bending tests on specimens made of sintered steel and processed using powder metallurgy

Microscopic observations of the heating (until melted) and cooling (at a defined cooling rate) of a polypropylene sample. The average spherulite size within the crystallized sample is then determined

DSC- and DMA-based characterisation of the heating (until melted) and cooling (at a defined cooling rate) of a polypropylene sample. Characteristic properties including melting temperature, modulus of elasticity-temperature curve and glass transition are then determined.

  6. Following confirmation of registration (at latest: 5.10.2023) you will also be able to access TUWEL. Log in with the following data: login: matriculation number, password: yourTUPassword. You will find continuously updated information and documents for all laboratory exercises associated with the course in TUWEL.   7. All students who have already completed the laboratory exercise "Transformation Hardening of Steel" in the laboratory course "Fundamentals of Materials Engineering" and have a certificate attesting as much for the entire exercise are not required to repeat this exercise of the course again. Please send your certificate and the group number for which you are registered to heinz.kaminski@tuwien.ac.at.
