308.139 Research on Engineering Materials

2021W, SP, 10.0h, 10.0EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 10.0
  • Credits: 10.0
  • Type: SP Seminar and Practice
  • Format: Hybrid

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

by selection and application of basic material characterization techniques - X-Ray Diffraction, mechanical testing methods (tensile tests, hardness measurements on various length scales), thermal analysis techniques (DSC, DTA, or dilatometry) as well as Scanning Electron Microscopy as well as classical methods of metallography (just to mention a few) - solving independently material science specific problems (structure-property relationships) and subsequently to properly interpret the determined parameters! In addition, through a combinatorial usage of different methods specific statements should be confirmed!

Subject of course

Literature survey, experimental and theoretical investigations on engineering materials particularly regarding the relation: processing - micro-structure - properties - application and recycling; testing specific characterisation methods.

Teaching methods

Combinatorial usage of diverse characterization techniques commonly used in materials science:

  • Basic metallographically preparation methods
  • Scanning electron microscopy
  • Mechanical testing methods (tensile test, hardness test, fracture toughness)
  • Thermal analysis (DSC, DTA, dilatometry, etc.)
  • Structure analysis by X-ray diffraction
  • Chemical analysis (EDX, RFA, etc.)

Mode of examination

Immanent

Additional information

The topic regarding one type of material and/or one method of investigations will be executed as project containing experimental and theoretical parts. The progress will be controlled and supervised by the lecturers; intermediate reports will be presented. The results will be reported within a seminar lecture and as scientific report, both will be evaluated.

Can be executed in English, Spanish or German. Registration at the preliminary meeting at the beginning of each semester, exceptionally as well during the semester by contacting the assistents. Topics: http://wwwt.tuwien.ac.at/ . Special literature will be stated during the experiments.
