Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the most relevant mechanisms which occur during fracture mechanical failure of metallic and polymeric materials.Additionally, the students know the most relevant methods and standards for the fracture mechanical and fractographic evauation of samples.

Subject of course

Fracture Mechanical Testing Methods: K_Ic-Test, Essential Work of Fracture (EWF), Testing of Adhesives, Indentation Fracture Mechanics, Quantitative Fracture Surface Analysis Possibilities and Limits of the different methods

Teaching methods

(1) Introduction into theoretical concepts of fracture mechanics

(2) practical investigations with metalic and composite materials

(3) fractography using scanning electron microscopy
