  • Format: Online

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe properties of the most important biomaterials and to list their applications, to determine biocompatibility as well as to analyse the differences of the most important material classes with respect to applications in biomedicine.

Subject of course

Biocompatible materials (metals, ceramics and polymers) and design; Knowledge of the internal structure of the most relevant material classes; Structure property relations; Methods for the determination of biocompatibility; Knee resp. hip joint implants and their testing; Degradable implants; Controlled drug release and drug delivery systems; Wound care und suture materials; Implants for the blood circulatory system; Dental and ophthalmological applications

Teaching methods

The class uses slides as basis for knowledge transfer. The theoretical knowledge is further deepened by sample calculations which are solved during the class.

Mode of examination

Oral
