Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe thermomechanical processes and their effects on the properties of light metals and their changes during the process and application. Students get an overview of the most important light metals, alloys, and intermetallic lightweight compounds.

In addition to their sustainable extraction, their processing and application are special focal points of the course. The students learn the comparative development of optimised light metal microstructures during the manufacturing process and their control through thermomechanical processes, as well as their role in technical applications.

Subject of course

Overview on light metals (Al, Mg, Ti alloys, Ti-Aluminides and new ally developments), systematic of alloy systems, strengthening mechanisms (precipitation hardening, phase transformations), shaping (casting, hot/cold forming), service properties, trends in alloys development

Teaching methods

Slides, Case studies including discussion on phase stabilities, phase and microstructure evolution, and their role for processing and properties. Switched classroom.
