  • Format: Online

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the concept of lightness and are able to answer which material properties influence lightness. in addition, they build an overview about the important light metal alloys, mainly Aluminum, Magnesium and Titanium, from extraction to processing and their application.

Students learn about the evolution of light metal microstructures during the manufacturing process. They are able to use their material science basic knowledge to interpret manufacturing processes, in particular thermomechanical processes that apply to light metals. The gained knowledge provides students solid bases for judgment and assessing light metal properties and their engineering applications.

Subject of course

Overview on light metals (Al, Mg, Ti alloys), systematic of alloy systems, strengthening mechanisms (precipitation hardening, phase transformations), shaping (casting, hot/cold forming), service properties, trends in alloys development

Teaching methods

Case studies and bringing samples for discussion
