Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to..

  • … read and interpret technical drawings in mechanical engineering.
  • … explain the procedures and the application of the most important manufacturing methods.
  • ... describe and apply details and terms from production technology which are important in connection with the technical drawing.
  • … draw in solder and welding connections as well as bolted connections according to drawing standards.
  • … identify the most important machine elements in technical drawings and to describe its functions.

Subject of course

Overview of production processes and their influence on the design: Non-cutting shaping and cutting shaping, joining technologies (welding, bolting, etc.).

Graphical representation and function of div. machine elements.

Simplified representation of threads, gear teeth representation and joints (welding, bolting).

Teaching methods

Presentation with slides, samples for demonstration, and examples.

Additional information

Planning winter semester 2021 (due to Corona pandemic): It is currently planned to hold the lectures in the lecture hall. There may be a seating restriction, which means that some students may only be able to attend online. It is planned to record the lectures and/or broadcast them live. This will certainly be the case if not everyone in the lecture hall can attend. As with all lectures of type VO, there is no compulsory attendance.

If any lockdowns occur, the lecture will be held online using Zoom.

Examination modalities

The course is assessed by means of a written examination (duration 1.5 hours) with the following focal points:

  • In the part that deals with manufacturing aspects, questions are asked about the individual manufacturing processes and their application. For this purpose, corresponding sketches often also have to be created (standard-compliant representation is not required in this case).
  • In the part on the "Function and representation of special elements", tasks are set on the representation of the fastening elements (welds, threads and screws). For the remaining elements, it is necessary that the elements can be identified on technical drawings (including knowing the correct designation) and that the function of the elements can be described.

Apart from appropriate writing material, no aids may be used in the examination.

The examination is graded by the number of points achieved and 50% of the points are required for positive completion.

If on-site written examinations are not possible (Corona), online examinations are conducted. They are conducted analogously to the on-site examinations as "Written Online Paper Examinations". If this is necessary, detailed instructions will be provided in TUWEL.
