Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to identify the technical correlations of the railway business due to selected insight into the reality of manufacturing and operation of rail vehicles, as well as certain rail-specific challenges, dealing with standards, and some procedures of verification


Subject of course

This course covers two main topics:

  1. Bench test
    a scale model of a rail vehicle’s carbody will be tested; this will show the problem itself, the approach for tackling the problem, the test set-up, performing the tests and finally taking down the minutes including the test results
  2. Excursions
    attending rolling stock specific excursions in Vienna including insight into systems, procedures, testing, application and interpretation of standards

Minutes – writing the minutes of the bench test and the excursions in small student-teams (2-3) and presentation of the results in the final meeting

Teaching methods


The following procedures will be applied:

  • bench test including tackling the problem, test set-up, solving the problem
  • excursions
  • writing minutes in small teams (2-3 students)
  • discussion of results
