Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to carry out state-of-the-art static calculations for steel constructions, to check calculations from software packages as well as to carry out necessary standards (Eurocode 3) research.

Subject of course

Theoretical part

1. Pull/push rod
2. Technical beam theory

  • Flexibility and Displacement method
  • Shear stress in the beam
  • Comparison of the first and second order beam theory

3. Stability of flexible rods

Practical part

1. Preparation of static calculations
2. Computer-supported preparation of static calculations
3. Development of load-bearing structures and their elements in steel an aluminium
4. Eurocode 3

  • Basic concepts and definitions
  • Stability
  • Fatigue
  • Notch formation and notch optimisation

These point will be discussed with reference to examples from practice and to international standards (EN 1993, EN 13001).
