Aim of course

  • Acquisition of the fundamental know-how for the design of supporting structures in steel construction and in materials handling.
  • Compilation of up-to-date, practice-oriented calculations for designs in steel and aluminium, with static loading (general stress check) or dynamic loading (endurance strength test).
  • Optimized development of the various design elements such as joints, butts and the layout in respect of the second order theory. Discussion of international standards such as EN 1993 (Eurocode 3), EN 13001 Cranes.

1. Pull/push rod
2. Technical beam theory

  • Flexibility and Displacement method
  • Shear stress in the beam
  • Comparison of the first and second order beam theory

3. Stability of flexible rods

Practical part

1. Preparation of static calculations
2. Computer-supported preparation of static calculations
3. Development of load-bearing structures and their elements in steel an aluminium
4. Eurocode 3

  • Basic concepts and definitions
  • Stability
  • Fatigue
  • Notch formation and notch optimisation

These point will be discussed with reference to examples from practice and to international standards (EN 1993, EN 13001).
