Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to perform measurement tasks within mechanical engineering applications using modern measurement systems (sensors, actuators, amplifiers and data acquisition systems), this means that students have to:

  • evaluate and interpret sensor data
  • to work with characteristic curve fields or to create them yourself
  • determine the most suitable sensor for a measurement
  • work with trust factors
  • prepare measuring points
  • apply strain gauge strips
  • use a Wheatstone bridge circuit for measurements
  • perform temperature compensation for a measurement
  • calibrate measuring devices
  • use a sweep generator

Subject of course

Measurement: Application of sensors, actuators, measurement amplifiers, and measurement equipmet. There are four tasks to be accomplished to solve typical problems in mechanical engineering:

  • application of strain gauges,
  • measuring of vibration/acoustic tasks,
  • process measuring techniques and
  • measuring of driving torques and accelerations of an engine unit.

By means of modern measuring equipment and methods as storage oscilloscope, signal analyzer, PC-measuring technique, etc., various signals are measured, analyzed and printed out. Measurement values are determined from measurement data considering various influences such as undeterminate systematic errors, statistical errors, etc.

Teaching methods

The student will be interactively assisted, when performing the idividual tasks.
