Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • understand and describe the most common applications and functions of cooling and heat pumping technologies,
  • design and integrate systems for selected applications in industry, commercial and building applications,
  • describe the various cycle processes for the generation of "cold" in refrigeration technologies and "heat" in heat pumps from mechanical energy or heat and calculate thermodynamic parameters (EES or COP),
  • describe the function of compressors, heat exchangers, piping, and fittings in the refrigeration cycles,
  • read and understand state diagrams for refrigerants and select refrigerants for different applications.

Subject of course

  • Description of the thermodynamic cycles of refrigeration systems.
  • Discussion of cold steam engines (vapor-compression and absorption refrigeration cycle) and cold gas engines.
  • Development of new refrigerants, adaptation to changed environmental creteria.
  • Description of the individual components of the refrigeration systems.
  • Sizing rules.
  • Control technique based problems.
  • Applications of refrigeration systems.
