Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to... • understand the challenges for science and industry arising from the energy transition • know important aspects for the description of industrial systems • explain solutions and methods for further development / optimization of industrial processes • give an overview of the areas of modeling, optimization, control & regulation, energy efficiency, energy systems, distribution networks, information and data management • understand the challenges nowadays by means of concrete applications from industry

Subject of course

The energy-optimized operation of industrial plants, their energy conversion, distribution and storage as well as their interaction with the general conditions of the energy industry are posing challenges for research and industry. Solutions in this pioneering field of research require interdisciplinary knowledge and innovative methods. For this reason, the Vienna University of Technology has launched the cooperative doctoral program "Smart Industrial Concept" (SIC!), in which this course is integrated. The aim of this lecture series is to give an overview of this interdisciplinary topic from the perspective of different disciplines and industrial companies.

Teaching methods

The following aspects of energy optimization are discussed by different professors from several departments and experts from industrial companies: • Smart Grids - Future Energy System • Holistic approaches to modeling, simulation and optimization of industrial plants and processes • Optimal control and hierarchical coupled control • Modeling and simulation of thermal processes and plants • Efficient energy use and energy management • Regulatory aspects of energy systems • Sector coupling (electricity, heat and gas networks) • Optimization of industrial plants • Information and data management in the industrial environment Requirements and challenges in industry: FunderMax, ILF, Evon, OSIsoft, EVN
