Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to categorize, to analyse and to describe the most important methods for the design of thermal turbomachines based on numerical fluid flow simulation.

Subject of course

This lecture gives the most important fundamentals and methods of the numerical computation of the flow fields in thermal turbomachines. The main topics are: Governing equations of fluid dynamics in a rotating system, Boundary conditions, S1/S2-stream surface concept, Meridional through flow methodes, Turbulence modeling for turbomachinery applications, Direct design of turbine blades, Inverse design of compressor blades, 3D-blading, Unsteady stator/rotor-interaction.
