Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • describe the fundamental concepts and designs of thermal turbo machines
  • explain the energy exchange in thermal turbo machines by means of simple calculations

Subject of course

Overview of fundamental concepts and designs of thermal turbomachines. Energy exchange and efficiencies. Preliminary thermal design of various types of thermal turbomachines. Stage characteristics. 2D and 3D flow in turbomachines. Loss mechanisms. Performance and control of turbines and compressors. Mechanical stresses, vibrations and mechanical design aspects
