Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to perform simple orbit calculations for satellites and estimate the fuel requirements for space missions.

They understand the technical challenges and physical limits of space travel.

Subject of course

Selection of proper coordinate frames for the formulation of the governing equations of space vehicles; basics of orbital mechanics; perturbation of orbital motion; dynamics of rockets and orbit manoeuvres; determination of interplanetary orbits; introduction to attitude dynamics

Teaching methods

Theoretical introduction to the basics of space flight mechanics, lecture with PowerPoint slides, discussion and calculation of case studies
