Subject of course

Team teaching Lisa Gaupp and Andrea Glauser

This course is held as team teaching.

Students from the mdw (IKM), TU Wien (Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning) and Leuphana University Lüneburg (Institute of Sociology and Cultural Organization) work together in this interdisciplinary seminar to explore the interplay of music, sound, built spaces and social interactions. The central starting point is the realization that musical practice does not take place in a 'vacuum', but in specific places that are atmospherically and spatially shaped by sound and soundscapes. These places, which range from cultural centers in converted barracks to production studios set up in private apartments, are an expression of materialized social processes and thus part of urban spatial production.

From a spatial theory perspective, these musical spaces are understood as dynamic elements of the urban fabric that are shaped by social interactions, cultural practice and spatial planning interventions. Such spaces are caught between tactical appropriations and formal planning processes, often serving as hubs for community work and cultural negotiation. This raises important questions, such as socially equitable access to cultural spaces, the role of music in neighborhood development and the representation of cultural assets in an urban context.

Based on academic literature on music, space and the city as well as their own interests, the students will take a closer look at selected locations in Vienna and the surrounding area in mixed mdw/TU groups and document the results of their research. In the final event of the seminar, the students from Vienna and Lüneburg will present their research to each other and discuss the results obtained in their respective cities.
