Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • Understanding, assessing and evaluating concepts of Degrowth and Post-growth
  • Identifying, analyzing and integrative working on multidimensional challenges of a socio-ecological crisis
  • Translating between and combining scientific approaches and planning practices
  • Application and implementation of gained knowledge into spatial planning practices

Subject of course

This master project offers an analytical and theory-based approach to problems in spatial planning concerning an increasing socio-ecological crisis. After a critical reflection of spatial planning regarding its position in a capitalist economic system and its own paradigms of growth we will discuss Post- growth and Degrowth as grounding concepts of a future planning system.

During this course we will discuss questions like:

  • How is Degrowth and Post-Growth understood in (spatial) planning?
  • Which growth paradigms are reflected in planning?
  • Which rules, strategies and instruments are needed to implement Degrowth/Post-Growth in spatial planning?
  • What are (international) flagship projects and good practices of Degrowth/Post-Growth?

Teaching methods
