Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to identify current problems in relation to the sustainability transformation in the mobility sector and, in particular, to record and address legal issues in this context. You understand how the Austrian legal system structures the different sub-areas of the transport and mobility sector and get to know the essential legal foundations. Building on this, they are able to actively participate in the discourse on the legal requirements for sustainable mobility and to help shape future developments.

Subject of course

The seminar deals with current legal problems in relation to the sustainability transformation in the mobility sector.

The students first get to know the essential legal basics of the transport and mobility sector in Austria in a systematic overview. The focus is on the one hand on traffic-related planning processes (especially road construction projects) from the perspective of climate protection, on the other hand in the field of public transport with a special focus on "alternative" sustainable mobility services.

The legal perspective is expanded to include technological and social science aspects that are relevant for a meaningful design of a legal framework for sustainable mobility. Guest lecturers from different disciplines therefore open up various perspectives on the topic and introduce the students to different methods for analyzing complex challenges of sustainability in the mobility sector.

During the semester, the students focus on a self-chosen topic. The selected main topics are worked out in individual or group work and the results are presented and discussed in a joint plenary session. The type of presentation can be chosen by the students themselves (creativity is encouraged). The results are finally summarized in a written elaboration (seminar paper).

The seminar is organized in cooperation with the LVA 230.057 interdisciplinary seminar on sustainable mobility.

Teaching methods

The objectives of the seminar are achieved using the following methods: Lectures to introduce the topic, guest lectures and critical exchange with representatives from different disciplines, debate in the plenum, independent work in groups, presentation of the results of the group work (format freely selectable) and preparation of a written summary (seminar paper ).
