Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • critically reflect upon spatial development strategies and the specific spatial challenges in Japan and Austria,
  • understand the impact of urban policies on the spatial development in different countries and on different levels,
  • identify impediments and challenges in the development and implementation of urban policies at different levels and in different administrative systems,
  • analyse urban spaces in intercultural cooperation and develop proposals for improvement,
  • communicate the specific challenges of spatial development in Austria to students from Japan through concrete examples.

The transdisciplinary lecture series "Experiencing Japan" is organized in cooperation with the Department of Architecture and Environment Systems at the Shibaura Institute of Technology (Tokyo).

In the first part - "Hospitality" - a group of students from Japan will be hosted at the TU Vienna in October 2024. 

Subject of course

Through collective discussions and research, topics of spatial planning will be reflected and interpreted from Japanese and Austrian perspectives. The specific challenges of spatial and transport planning practice in the two countries are investigated. Out of this interdisciplinary and theoretical discourse, strategies or recommendations for future spatial and/or transport development policy are developed.

Registration modalities

In the first part - "Hospitality" - a group of students from Japan will be hosted at TU Vienna in October 2024. An excursion to Japan is envisaged for the summer semester 2025. Students who complete the first part ("Hospitality") are guaranteed a spot on the excursion in the summer semester.
