Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to assess the impact of development planning measures on climate change by example of a specific planning project, to identify the need and options for action.

Subject of course

Climate change is becoming increasingly tangible for many people and regions. In the UN Action Plan "Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development", the member states of the United Nations have committed themselves to working towards 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the national, regional and international level by 2030. Cities and municipalities are important partners in the implementation of climate protection and climate change adaptation. Within the framework of development planning, municipalities define medium- and long-term goals such as targeted development areas (settlement development), future building land requirements, functional structuring of open spaces as well as planned measures for technical, social and cultural infrastructure and to communicate these through a plan representation.

In this course, integrated spatial development concepts produced within the framework of the course "Project 2 - Spatial Development Planning" are linked with information from climate modelling. The concepts are tested and evaluated for their climate impact using criteria developed by the students themselves. This means that their own planning decisions are evaluated retrospectively, with particular regard to climate protection.

Teaching methods

Literature research, research and evaluation of national and international best practice examples, development, weighting and evaluation of criteria for assessing the impact of spatial development measures on the climate, identification of options for action.
