Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

... reflect on the theoretical and methodological foundations of their doctoral  dissertation and consider them in their further research.

Subject of course

The aim of the seminar is to promote interdisciplinary discussion at the Institute of Spatial Planning on dissertation projects as well as dissertation results; both first and second supervisors of the dissertation are invited to the joint seminar.

Specific goals for dissertation students: Recognition of the range of professional approaches to various topics, critical reflection on the methods and results of one's own work, possible adaptation, correction or reinforcement of one's own work.

The seminar for doctoral candidates unites the doctoral theses supervised at the Institute of Spatial Planning in a joint discourse. The participants of the seminar will discuss two main topics on the basis of the short papers submitted in advance by the students (see schedule):

- Theoretical foundations
- Methodological foundations

Teaching methods

In the first seminar unit, the status of the dissertation is discussed. From the optional theoretical or methodological foundations, a topic is selected on which a short paper (max. 5 pages, plus references) is to be written as preparation for the joint discussions in the seminar. In addition, the doctoral candidate will provide 1-2 central scientific papers. In addition, the seminar instructor will suggest supplementary literature to be read by both the dissertation candidate and the seminar participants.

Based on this, the methodological and/or theoretical approach will be presented for discussion in a presentation by the dissertants - the plenary debate will build on this as well as on the short papers and the jointly read literature.

The final seminar unit is expected to take place at the beginning of June 2022 at the landuni in Drosendorf Castle.

- First seminar unit, review and discussion of the state of editing;

- Writing of a short paper, literature study

- presentation

- Final plenary discussion
