Aspern in Wien Donaustadt - torn between cosy village and wild sprawl?!
In this module, basic concepts and procedures of communication and participation in spatial planning are theoretically and empirically deepened. In the theoretical examination, the students deal with questions of governance and democracy and learn to classify participation processes of actors from different social spheres and their active participation in urban development processes in the change of politics, administration, economy and society.
In the empirical deepening, the students analyze topic-related participation processes (e.g. in the context of LA21, Smart City, urban renewal,...) and different formats of civil society participation (e.g. participatory budgeting).
In the summer semester 2022, this will be done using the example of the Danube City Vienna and specifically the example of the district Aspern. Donaustadt is a highly diverse district in terms of urban development and social space, and has been the fastest-growing district in the city of Vienna for years. Not only the well-known large development areas Seestadt Aspern, Hausfeld or Berresgasse are being developed, but also in the many formerly village structures of the district there are manifold planning and building activities. With the new residential areas and functions, not only the spatial structure in the district is changing, but also the social structures and the socio-cultural fabric.
Some residents react to this with increased participatory activities. In this module the processes of change in the Donaustadt will be analyzed from a socio-spatial perspective with a special focus on the district of Aspern. The LVA takes place in cooperation with the citizens' initiative of the district Aspern.
