Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to independently capture and reflect on topics from the spectrum of specific spatial conditions, trends, future perspectives and spatial planning steering options using suitable methods and to prepare them academically by submitting a bachelor thesis. In the summer semester 2022, the spatial focus will lie on rivers, river landscapes and river regions. However, the overall topic can also be understood as a synonym and deal with the excessive consumption beyond the actual demand (e.g. of soil, resources, mobility, and sealing).

The registration for all bachelor seminars in the summer semester 2022 is conducted via the course 280.967 (Bachelor thesis general registration). After the registration deadline, all participants will automatically be assigned to the TISS courses of the respective seminars!

Subject of course

From spring creeks through small rivers to mighty streams - rivers form an important lifeline of the natural and cultural landscape. They connect and separate. They are home to valuable ecosystems, shape landscapes and, last but not least, are important sources of energy. As connecting elements on the one hand and concise boundaries on the other, they contribute significantly to regional identity, which is reflected in the names of regions (e.g. Thayaland, Danube Delta, Po Valley, Innviertel, Enns Valley).

Possible topics for the bachelor thesis:

  • the specific characteristics of rivers as essential resources for the future development of (rural) regions
  • the relevance of rivers for the common good, especially with regard to accessibility and potential uses (river baths, protected areas)
  • intercommunal and regional cooperation in river regions
  • energy production, energy-related spatial planning and climate change aspects along rivers
  • rivers as mobility axes
  • rivers as border areas - challenges, opportunities and strategies
  • overflow society and sustainability

In combination with elective module 4 (Cooperation Region: over~flow), the spatial situation of rivers, river landscapes and river regions will be systematically assessed in the summer semester 2022.

Teaching methods

The bachelor seminar enables students to engage in a largely self-organized, interactive, and practice-oriented work process for the preparation of their individual bachelor thesis. The students work as a "peer group", supporting and advising each other in the development of questions and the preparation of the thesis.

The students are asked to derive and elaborate current and relevant research questions and planning tasks for the thesis from the problem areas they have chosen for themselves - supported by the peer group and the supervisor*.

Spectrum of methods:

  • desk research and reflection
  • on-site research
  • participation in thematically relevant presentations and lectures
  • interviews with local and regional actors
  • specific methods adequate to the research question, such as document analysis, mapping, storytelling, social design, scenario methods, ...
  • analysis and identification of possibilities for action via text, graphics and plans
  • keeping a research diary

Additional information

In addition to the bachelor seminar, we recommend that you also take the elective module 4: Cooperation Region: over~flow. The registration for both courses of the elective module is conducted via the VU Co-Operation and Identification in Regions – over~flow (280.809).

The elaboration of text and graphics/plan has to be carried out according to established scientific rules (e.g. clean short and long citation, gender-appropriate language).
