Second homes have a long tradition in Austria. In alpine areas in particular, this has been a mass phenomenon since the 1960s. In addition to various positive effects, second homes are also associated with various spatially critical developments and trends. Be it rising property prices, urban sprawl or social upheaval.
The master's project aims to track down second homes in the alpine region and examine current trends and problems. To this end, we would particularly like to enter into a dialogue with planning practitioners and politicians. Accordingly, an excursion of around 1 week will be part of the master's project.
In the first - theoretical - part, the technical background of second homes will be dealt with at the beginning of the sommer semester 2024. The current literature, the legal and technical basics as well as the current status of the discussions on second homes and in particular the role of spatial planning measures will be worked on.
In the second practical part, the actual planning challenges and the practical feasibility of proposed spatial planning solutions are examined on the basis of a selected region (Tyrol). An excursion to the planning area will take place in spring 2024, including meetings with regional and local decision-makers. In a final report, the theoretical considerations will be combined with practical experience and corresponding conclusions and proposed solutions will be derived.
