In this course, the term "strategy" and "spatial development" are dealt with the background of spatial, social and political-administrative conditions with using specific examples. The conception of strategies, decision-making and participation processes are critically questioned. In addition, there is an in-depth discussion of the challenges, problems, and possible solutions of integrated development planning, which makes use of a wide range of possible plannning instruments. In an action-oriented and practice-oriented approach, there is also a in-depth examination of objectives, concepts, institutional arrangements and processes of integrated development planning, taking into account of various specialist plans on different spatial scales.

Group Getzner/Renner (English): The Triumph of the City (?)
Aims and teaching goals of the seminar
In this seminar we will do a deep dive into a book of one of the most influential urban economists at the moments, Edward Glaeser. In his book “The Triumph of the City” he presents insights on why cities are “our greatest invention [that] makes us richer, smarter, greener, healthier and happier”. The book is written from a perspective of an urban economist living in New York City, and is thought-provoking in terms of the functions of cities for advancing social, economic and environmental-sustainable development.
Students are expected to critically discuss selected chapters, and are encouraged to reflect on the evidence provided from a spatial and urban planning perspective.
Students will work on their seminar papers throughout the semester, taking Glaeser’s book as a starting point to develop their own research topics.
Potential topics of seminar papers
The seminar has a significantly economic focus:
- basic concepts of urban economics;
- economics of density, networks, costs and benefits of urban environments;
- innovation, economic and social development, differences between urban and rural communities;
- urban infrastructures, pros and cons of urban life;
- case studies on urban development, problems and solutions, and planning approaches.
Structure of the seminar

- Reading of selected chapters of Edward Glaeser’s book “The Triumph of the City” to prepare for a joint discussion of concepts and principles; preparation of a short (2 pages) reflection on the chapters.
- Individual research questions including basic literature and potential case studies.
- Draft of a seminar paper & presentation in the plenary session.
- Final presentation of seminar papers (results, conclusions).
