Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to unterstand different quantitative concepts of spatial analysis, to put them into a methodological context and to use them for solving complex planning challenges. Applying theoretical und methodical knowledge to real planning problems, students can improve their ability to think in an interconnected way and to reflect the strengths and weaknesses of different analytical methods.

Subject of course

The course introduces different quantitative methods of  spatial analysis, modelling and evaluation:

  • cluster analysis
  • multiple linear regression
  • time series and panel data analysis
  • GIS-based routing
  • spatial regression

All these methods are basically explained, critically reflected and practically applied for real questions of spatial analysis.

Teaching methods

  • Introduction of quantitative methods of spatial analysis
  • critical reflection of limits and potential applications
  • empirical application with R and ArcGIS
