Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply qualitative social research methods. This includes various approaches to the collection of empirical data as well as the evaluation of data.

Subject of course

This course is part the faculty-wide focus in research and teaching titled 'The Transformation of the Existing Building Stock' (2023/2024). For further information see the following link: https://futurelab.tuwien.ac.at/jahresthema-2023-24

The lecture exercise (VU) provides an overview of qualitative research methods and also allows the practical application of methods. The focus is on conducting and evaluating interviews, policy and discourse analysis and social space analysis. The central aim of the VU is to teach core competences of empirical social research that are relevant for spatial research and planning. For the WS 2023, however, there is also a content-related topic: the topic of 'stock'. Against the background of this theme, the following questions arise:

Interviews:

  • How is the argument for (or against) the preservation of a built structure made in a particular context?
  • What ideas are associated with new construction (e.g., of single-family houses) and what ideas with renovation (e.g., of single-family houses)?

Policy and discourse analysis:

  • What types and functions of stock are discussed in the debate on stock?
  • What strategies and techniques are discussed for preservation and demolition?
  • Which groups of actors are discussed in the preservation debate and what roles do they play?

Social space analysis:

  • Which social infrastructures (e.g., recreational, educational facilities) can be found in the stock of Viennese social housing in various building periods?
  • Can the respective building period also be traced ethnographically on the basis of the everyday practice of housing estate residents?
