Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the basics of International Urban Studies as well as complex dimensions of urbanisation processes that manifest themselves spatially in cities, rural areas and regions.

These spatial analytical elements are embedded in systematising analyses of concrete urbanisation processes; the course also provides an insight into contemporary debates in Urban Studies with a focus on urban culture, public spaces and everyday life in cities. Students learn how planning, urban design and architecture have already developed and implemented different approaches to take changing everyday routines into account.

Subject of course

**Change 26th February 2024: examination mode: written and oral possible**
The aim of the elective module is to convey the analytical, theoretical and methodological foundations of international urban studies; to capture the essential learning fields relevant to grasp the global processes of urbanisation, always discussed using concrete examples. The local and regional specifics of urban development in different international contexts will also be explained and an understanding of the path dependency of urbanisation will be developed. Urbanisation is not understood here solely in morphological, settlement-geographical or -sociological or political-economic terms, but also always in socio-cultural, socio-ecological and socio-political terms.

The lecture teaches foundational methodic and conceptional knowledge and gives insights in contemporary debated in urban studies. The initial analytic perspectives in use are urban culture, urban everyday life and lived spaces in the city. Students learn, how planning, urban development and architecture can integrate different approaches to acknowledge changing routines of everyday life.
