Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to participate in discussions on sustainable urban development and planning in theory and practice. They have profoundly dealt with debates on sustainability and resilience, urban development and planning.
Students are informed about various empirical and methodological approaches to assess urban sustainability practices and local resilience building and are able to analyse urban processes.

Subject of course

The lecture exercise focusses on empirical approaches to assess urban sustainability. Students will critically discuss prominent sustainable development indicators as well as different governance and planning perspectives to urban transitions. Therefore, they will process and investigate scientific literature in English but also prepare an own analysis. Taking a particular focus on community-led local development and participatory approaches, the participants shall carry out an own qualitative case-study research, using participant observation and expert interviews to elaborate on their chosen research topic.

Teaching methods

Students read scientific papers and discuss methodological approaches to urban sustainability in class. They will carry out a case-study research, working in small groups.
The final result is a written summary of the research results, which is also presented and discussed in a workshop setting.
