After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

... on the example of rivers and valleys ...

  • capture and present past spatial development as well as current conditions and trends using cartography and mapping as well as key figures and infographics
  • name specific challenges in terms of ecological sensitivity and threats to uses along the river / in the valley / in the region, as well as to identify and vividly present the importance of rivers and river areas for the common good, especially with regard to their tangibility and to sustainable use
  • to draft general visions and future perspectives and to present spatial development possibilities using texts and plans
  • to show tangible measures for the improvement of river courses, banks, river basins and regions
  • to discuss rivers as an identification feature for regional cooperation

This course is part of the elective module 4 ("Cooperation Region").

Subject of course

The subject of the elective module is the in-depth examination of river spaces and river regions. They connect and separate at the same time, can be used easily or poorly, are natural or shaped, dynamic or dammed up, accessible or closed off, touristic or untouched. The corresponding spatial, social as well as structural and planning conditions, the specific current (and historical) use interests and conflicts on and along rivers are analyzed. Based on the individual research, which will be complemented by specialist input from experts and political decision-makers, strategies and visions for the future development of specific rivers will be developed. The resulting diverse picture of visions and strategies is aimed at a large circle of stakeholders and is intended to raise awareness for a more conscious and careful use of rivers.
