After successful completion of the course, students are able to systematically explain concrete projects and concepts at the district level and the planning processes and instruments behind them, and to analyse and evaluate them in terms of their foundations, values and planning strategies.
The development of the city stands in the field of tension between social, professional and ideological values and premises. Knowledge of the political, social and cultural context of the respective time is therefore indispensable if one wants to read and understand the built reality of the city and the different strategies and projects.
Analysing projects and processes, developing, reflecting on and discussing value standards, taking a stance - all this is the subject of the debates and discussions in this module. The students deepen their communicative and social skills and sharpen their view for creative and innovative spatial planning solutions and strategies.
In this semester, four Viennese projects at different spatial levels as well as their processes and instruments will be analysed.
Introduction to projects, processes and instruments in urban development, joint discussion of practical examples, presentations, relection on the content learned
The VU is part of the elective module 2 "Urban development projects, processes and instruments". It will be complemented by an excursion to current district development projects in Vienna. Participants will bee inscribed in the course 280.806 automatically after the kick-off.
Participation in discussions, presentation, reflection
Students are expected to have knowledge of the history of urban planning ideas and of the theoretical and instrumental principles of spatial planning. The positive completion of compulsory module 1 ("Initial study and orientation phase") is a prerequisite for completing the module.
