Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to....

  • comprehend planning theory models and concepts,
  • participate in the discipline's communication about itself,
  • understand the role of self-reflection and critique in planning through the development of theory,
  • recognize connections between planning theory paradigms and the constant change in planning practice,
  • relate planning theories to planning practice,
  • recognize basic positions of ethics and political philosophy as benchmarks of individual or political action,
  • develop a critical understanding/awareness of values using cases and conflicts of spatial planning as examples,
  • apply reflection and argumentation from an ethical perspective.

Subject of course

The course consists of three course blocks on the topics of planning theory and planning ethics, each containing a lecture and an exercise:

  • Planning theory I (communicative turn, cultural turn in planning theory)

  • Planning theory II (international planning theory and space, everyday life and democracy)

  • Planning ethics: ethics in spatial planning, ideologies and values in space, justice (lecture, workshop, reflection)
