Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to analyze a given project area and use their findings to devise a spatial planning/urban development design; apply the theoretical knowledge acquired so far by devising concepts and designs for a layout plan, using an interdisciplinary approach; use joined-up thinking; translate mission statements for urban planning into concepts; systematically develop alternatives; present their results in a clear, conclusive and engaging way.

Subject of course

Design training for working on complex urban development tasks. Course content relates to: developing a spatial planning design concept and in-depth treatment of selected issues and key areas; developing thematic concepts (buildings, non-built-up and green spaces, transport) at different scales and producing a synthetic view in a detailed urban design master plan; presenting the design in a physical building model. Working in assisted design groups, students will have the opportunity for an in-depth approach to the design task. Skills to be imparted include the ability to develop and translate spatial ideas and plans into visual designs.

Teaching methods

Lecture input on the subject as well as selected topics of concept design; joint visit of the project site; the iterative design process is accompanied by and supervised at design workshops and revision meetings; discussion of model examples; model making and design sketching; interim presentations with feedback; exhibition and discussion of works.

Examination modalities

The required achievements are indicated in the task book (available via TUWEL).

Attendance of this course is compulsory as assessment is based on participants’ continuous performance.

Active participation (revisions), the interim presentations laid down in the task book’s schedule and the final submission all contribute to the final grade.

Assessment criteria*

- A conclusive underlying idea and mission statement; reference to the location and the student’s individual analysis

- Quality of the urban space design as well as the open space design and development plan (a critical evaluation of the current state of research, urban planning discourses and spatial planning, reference examples)

- A concept for developing and designing public spaces

- Feasibility / environmental compatibility / integration into the surrounding area

- Presentation: expression and readability of the presentations, quality of the graphic and technical realization, conclusive explanation of the work, depth of exploration
