Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the history of ideas of the city and the effects of mission statements for urban planning on the morphology and structure of cities and urban environments; read and recognize functional and spatial building blocks of the urban fabric and use of space; describe the development of planning tools and identify both hard and soft tools used for spatial planning tasks and problems. Students will develop an awareness of, and sensitivity for, the basic principles and tools of local spatial planning and will thus have a basic knowledge of local spatial planning at their disposal.

Subject of course

Urban and spatial planning have changed considerably over the past few decades in terms of both their tools and their purposes and fields of action. Today, the focus is on developing and shaping the existing fabric rather than on rebuilding cities and fundamentally changing their structures. Spatial planning needs to contribute to the long-term preservation of existing urban structures and help make them fit for the future. In order to do that it is necessary to understand the forces and factors at work in a city and to manage and control them with the help of effective tools. Proactive planning, therefore, requires knowledge, expertise and a sense of responsibility on the part of the planners. This series of lectures is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills with regard to the perception, utilization and transformation of cities and urban spaces.
