After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • undertsand basic terms and concepts
  • assess the meaning of spatial planning regarding land use decision
  • explain land use patterns
  • assess the meaning of land rent, transport costs, accessibility and agglomeration effects
  • understand spatial planning as important task for the production of locations and provision of locational quality
  • identify locational systems and and evaluate the meaning of technological progress
  • explain the influence of planning measures on locational quality and socioeconomic processes on the urban/regional level
  • discuss basic driving forces of regional development and the meaning of demographic structures
  • discuss the interplay of interventions and urban/regional planning developmen

Subject of course

In the run of the lecture following topics and questions are presented and discussed

  • basic terms and concepts of Regional Science in a planning context;
  • land use patterns explained through land rent, transport costs, accessibility and agglomeration effects;
  • production of locational quality;
  • models of urban structure and urban development;
  • locational quality as as a pre-condition of land use patterns and socioeconomic strutures;
  • basic terms and concepts of regional demographic development;
  • role and meaning of spatial planning to recent problems of urban/regiona development

Teaching methods

Lecturing of most important technical terms and scientific approaches and models,

study of basic literature resp. presentation of most relevant articles

discussion of new trends in land use development: technological progress, ICT, challenges and interventions of spatial planning

Examination modalities

wrtten exam with two parts at each date of exam:

1st part: multiple-choice-questions

2nd part: questions to 3 different topics are defind for open qualitative answers.


Registration and deregistration modalities:

Registration and deregistration for exams and courses after the TISS registration deadline are to be sent in justified cases (cases of illness, etc.) only by e-mail to srf@tuwien.ac.at.
