Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • analyse the development dynamics in the urban region of Linz and devise a mobility-oriented settlement development along high-level infrastructure.
  • apply relevant regulations and spatial development strategies in space, taking into account formative, social, ecological and traffic-related demands, and to develop them in interdisciplinary teams, to prepare them graphically in an appealing way and to argue rhetorically.
  • select and apply suitable participation methods and instruments of internal and external communication and to design the corresponding processes.

Subject of course

50 years of Gartenstadt Puchenau - and now what? New images of sustainable urbanity in the Linz region

"The population of the Linz region is expected to grow from 340,000 to 373,000 between 2016 and 2030 (source: ÖROK regional projection 2014). Which mode of transport is chosen to cover daily distances also depends to a large extent on the settlement structures in which the future inhabitants will live. It is therefore imperative that the development of the settlement and economic area in the Linz region be increasingly oriented towards the axes and junctions of public transport in the future." (Source: Mobility vision for the Linz region, 2018)

Based on the recently published regional planning strategy of the federal state of Upper Austria ("upper REGION2030") and the current mobility vision for the region of Linz ("kumm steig um"), this project aims to develop new images of sustainable urbanity in the vicinity of stations of rail-bound mass transport along the Linzer Lokalbahn from Linz to Alkoven and along the planned Stadtregionalbahn from Linz to Gallneukirchen.

Within the framework of P3 / Entwerfen the following topics will be dealt with:

  • Spatial development models along the existing Linzer Lokalbahn (LILO) from Linz to Alkoven and along the newly planned Stadtregionalbahn from Linz to Gallneukirchen
  • Urban framework planning for selected development zones at specific stop areas along the two rail axes listed in point 1
  • Development of new urban development models and building typologies that prototypically show what a sustainable urbanity in the greater Linz area could look like

An important focus of the coupled course is the cooperation and exchange of different local actors with regional planning and municipalities in the planning area.

The planning teams are interdisciplinary, which is why the course is offered as a P3 or Entwerfen in the master's degree courses in spatial planning and architecture. The teams have different focuses, which are discussed and developed together with the teachers and experts along different topics.
