After successful completion of the course, students are able to...
... to ascertain and analyse the constitution and uses of public space and adjacent areas using various methods of urban, mobility and social space research (observations, interviews, photo documentation, mental maps etc.) and to derive requirements for redesign.... to analyse street spaces in a problem-related manner, to develop a draft for the redesign of the street space and adjoining ground floor zones based on this - applying relevant regulations and taking into account design, social, ecological and traffic-related demands on the use of public space - in interdisciplinary teams and to prepare this draft in a graphically appealing manner and to argue rhetorically.... to select and apply suitable participation methods as well as instruments of internal and external public relations work and to design the corresponding processes.

BackgroundThe Institute of Spatial Planning will move back to the Karlsplatz campus (Karlsgasse 11 and 13) in late summer 2020. On the one hand, it is to be welcomed that the course of study in spatial planning is also moving closer to architecture in terms of location, while on the other hand, challenges such as different interests and demands arise for the new location. Karlsgasse is not only of great importance for the TU Vienna, the Grätzl and its residents and companies, but is also a meeting place for students, teachers, researchers and all those involved in our faculty life. In the coming summer semester there will be an excellent opportunity to rethink the public space of Karlsgasse in interdisciplinary student teams, to develop visions for the future and to discuss and design a campus worth living on for all.An important focus of the linked course is therefore the cooperation and exchange of different actors within the TU Campus. - The course is offered as a project or design in the master's studies of spatial planning and architecture. - Interdisciplinary teams make it possible to incorporate different perspectives and expertise into the design and process. - The teams have different focal points, which are discussed and developed together with the teachers and experts along different topics:
- Public space "Karlsgasse" and the Grätzl: Survey methods, understanding, recording, experiencing and analysing space. - Street space design, embedded in a dialogical competition procedure, which considers and implements social, spatial, traffic (legal) and technical conditions in design approaches, usage requirements and design elements. - Participation and public relations as a mandate: methods, instruments, application possibilities - Insights into interdisciplinary research projects, inputs from practice, interventions in public space

Students work in interdisciplinary teams to develop concepts for the Karlsgasse street space as a publicly conceived part of the TU campus as well as a concrete, resource-saving implementation for the public, imminent potential use of the new Karlsgasse.
