Die Field Trips in Public Space 2021 behandeln die digitalen Transformationen des Öffentlichen. In virtuellen Expeditionen um die Welt, werden spezifische Aspekte in ausgewählten Wirkungssphären der Digitalisierung erkundet. Der Ausflug in die Ferne wird dabei virtuell stattfinden. Wir bringen die Welt zu uns: Reisen an Ort und Stelle.
Themenschwerpunkt 2021:
Unser Zusammenleben durchläuft derzeit einen Wandel, bei dem sich zwei hochkomplexe und offene Systeme überlagern: die Stadt und das globale, digitale Informationssystem. Codes werden mit den materiellen Dingen sowie den Räumlichkeiten des urbanen Alltags verschränkt, um hybride Formen von „Code-Spaces“ (Kitchin & Dodge 2004) zu erzeugen. Die Verwicklungen zwischen Menschen, Daten, Algorithmen, digitalen Plattformen, Big Business, Konsumenten, Staat, Gesellschaft, der Öffentlichkeit und den öffentlichen Räumen der Stadt bilden ein vielfältig miteinander verflochtenes System.
Die digitale Welt ist nicht mehr eine bloße Spiegelung der physischen, vielmehr amalgamiert sie sich mit der physischen Welt und produziert immerwährend neue Formen von cyber-physical landscapes. Wie sehen diese neuen Landschaften aus? Wer produziert diese Räume und wie verändern sie unsere Alltagserfahrung? Expeditionen in diese Landschaften sind buchstäbliche Reisen ins Unbekannte. Es gibt nur wenige Landkarten davon und diese müssen kontinuierlich neu bezeichnet werden.
Gastprofessur 2021:
Manuela Naveau (PhD) ist Künstlerin, Forscherin, Wissenschafterin und Kuratorin der Ars Electronica Linz, wo sie gemeinsam mit dem Künstlerischen Geschäftsführer Gerfried Stocker die Abteilung Ars Electronica Export entwickelte und operativ fast 18 Jahre leitete. Seit Oktober 2020 ist M. Naveau als Professorin für Critical Data / Interface Cultures an der Kunstuniversität Linz tätig und übernahm Lehraufträge an der Paris Lodron Universität in Salzburg und an der Donau-Universität Krems. Ihr Buch "Crowd and Art - Kunst und Partizipation im Internet" wurde 2017 im transcript Verlag, Deutschland, veröffentlicht. Das Buch basiert auf ihrer Dissertation, für die sie 2016 vom Bundesministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Wirtschaft mit dem Award of Excellence ausgezeichnet wurde.
Ian Banerjee hat Architektur und Stadtplanung in Wien und Brasilien studiert. Seine Lehr- und Forschungstätigkeiten an der TU Wien und anderen Institutionen konzentrieren sich auf die aktuellen Themen des internationalen Urbanismus. In den letzten 20 Jahren konnte er Erfahrungen in rund fünfzig Städten auf vier Kontinenten sammeln. Er interessiert sich insbesondere für urbane Innovationen, neue Lernlandschaften (‚educational urbanism’) und automatisierte Mobilität. Derzeit forscht er über digitale Plattformen, civic tech und die ko-kreative Stadt im digitalen Zeitalter.
Specifically, field trips focus on the scientific preparation, implementation, documentation and evaluation of expeditions (in the sense of discovery or research trips).
Phase 1: Preparation (March-April)
In preparatory workshops, theoretical positions of the topic area are discussed. The relevant questions for the respective expedition goal as well as suitable methods of information acquisition are worked out in small groups and presented in a research proposal.
Phase 2: Expedition (May)
Instead of a joint excursion, the teams will go on an exploration independently in May 2020 - observing, conducting conversations, recording and documenting. During the expeditions they will keep a daily blog and report on their observations.
Phase 3: Evaluation (June)
After the expedition, the observations, archive material, field notes and interviews must be evaluated and reflected upon. The collected information should be ordered, reassociated and precisely elaborated in relation to the original research question.
Application and crediting (066 443)
The course is aimed at master students of both architecture and spatial planning. Students of architecture can get credit for the course as follows: Module (10 ECTS) + free electives (2 ECTS). (A crediting in the sense of a module including supplementary subjects is not possible)
