Aim of course

Cities and urban regions are increasingly confronted with challenges relating to sustainable development. How can this be understood and implemented? The aim of this seminar is to investigate the topics of sustainability and urban planning, and to raise awareness on the issue.

In more detail, students will:

  • Familiarize themselves with debates around sustainability, urban development and planning
  • Develop and discuss ideas about how to deal with the topic of sustainable development from different perspectives and on different (spatial) levels
  • Learn to process and critically investigate scientific literature in English
  • Learn to discuss scientific literature in a seminar setting

After having completed this course, students should be able to participate in the discussion on sustainable urban development and planning, know various thematic concepts relating to it, and carry out urban planning following criteria of sustainability.

  • 12.03.2019 - Session 1: Kick-off and an introduction to the topics
  • 19.03.2019 - Session 2: How are sustainability and urban development related?
  • 02.04.2019 - Session 3: Sustainable urban development and planning
  • 09.04.2019 - Session 4: Final Workshop for summarizing and discussion

The SE consists of 4 sessions. The first 3 sessions are an introduction into the topic in a seminar structure.Session 4 (workshop) is a summary of the content of the first 3 sessions.
