Students will understand the concept of Living Labs, driving forces and the necessary trans- and interdisciplinary research- and implementation approaches. The practical part of the lecture will lay the fundamentals for future research- and implementation projects. In co-operation with the city of Vienna it is planned to develop a new research focus on Living Labs . The lecture shall give the possibility to get an insight in the topic to be able to decide, if a future collaboration in the form of a master thesis, etc. is intended.
Fundamentals of Living Lab concepts are presented. Different scientific approaches are discussed and Living Labs in their multiple fields of applications, starting from Open-Innovation and User Innovation concepts, to Transformation- and Transition-research and Resilience- and Sustainability concepts.
As a background, the lecture will provide a short introduction about the impact of climate change on cities, European policy to decarbonize society and pathways to a sustainable development in the sectors buildings, mobility, urban planning, governance, and involvement of residents with participation or Citizen Design Science.
In the practical part students will investigate best practice examples, which will be compiled, and jointly evaluated. At least one excursion is planned to discuss implemented Living Lab concepts.
Students will research Living Lab best practice examples alongside relevant categories of target setting, infrastructure, planning and innovation and involvement of residents. They will present and discuss the results in the course of the lecture.
