Issues and problems are discussed on the basis of a mandatory excursion to a selected rural region. The course looks at possible types of landuse and their impact on the hsbit and presents applied planning instruments and funding programmes at local, regional and Länder levels. Students will take a close look at the numerous challenges in rural areas and learn about forward-looking occupational fields.

The seminar focuses on current challenges facing rural areas in times of globalisation, EU enlargement and the intense use made of EU structural funding. Based on visits, lectures and input papers by practitioners, the course will present and discuss changing functions in rural areas, instruments and strategies for its development and selected funding programmes.
