After successful completion of the course, students are able to analyze the challenges in a rural region and to develop strategies for improvement on selected topics.
The ongoing structural change in agriculture and forestry forces rural regions to take radical steps to ensure economic survival. This is leading to the emergence of much-noticed approaches throughout Europe to use landscapes and regions sustainably for tourism, economy, energy and as other resource reservoirs.Starting with an overview of the debate on the topic "cultural landscape" and the changes in cultural landscapes, especially in the past decades, the first block of the paper presents the planning instruments for cultural landscape development. This is followed by an introduction to the more recent approaches to cooperative "governance" of cultural landscapes. The second part is devoted to the presentation and discussion of practical examples of cultural landscape development. Through a mixture of impulse lectures by the head of the course and presentations by practitioners, students can engage in an intensive discourse on completely new development perspectives of cultural landscapes.
In the context of the course, the most important functions of the cultural landscape and their future development are analysed and discussed. Based on lectures and presentations by practitioners, the functional change of the rural area and its manifold effects on the landscape are shown
