After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe and explain the basic structures of the Ausrian legal system. They understand the relationship between international, EU and national law. They know in which legal and political context law is enacted and implemented. They are able to differentiate between the different state powers and legal acts and understand their function and interrelationship within a legal state. The students acquire a basic legal knowledge, on basis of which they can elaborate other specific legal issues in course of their studies.
Definition and function of law; state and constution; the basic principles of the Austrian Constitution; state powers and state organisation; elections and law-making; fundamental rights; organisation, tasks and type of actions of the administration; basics of EU law: evolution, authorities, competences, legal acts, internal market; specific administrative law: planning and building law, plant permit law; procedural law and judicial review
Lecture in the form of short instructional videos; review of the lecture on basis of case studies, multiple choice questions and votes.
Written exam with a mix of multiple-choice and open questions.
