Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • Understand the major theories of development and their implications for funding strategies and project approaches
  •  understand urban and regional development as multiscale and uneven processes against the background of globalization, macro-regional cooperation and national policies
  • grasp the variety of urban and regional contexts in the Global South
  • critically reflect on the role of planners and architects from the Global North in urban and regional development processes of the Global South
  • critically discuss the objectives, instruments and practices of local, regional, national and international development cooperation actors and institutions
  • understand the challenges of practically doing regional development in the Global South
  • Know the standard project management tools used in international cooperation
  • Understand the potential and limitations of project work in international cooperation and be aware of current trends in the sector

Subject of course

-          The evolution of ‘development theories’ over time with a focus on theories of postcolonialism, de-colonization and post-development as well as on political-economic perspectives

-          urban theories in the context of the Global South

-          planning approaches and planning theories for and in the urban contexts of the Global South

-          characteristics of urban and regional development in different macro-regions of the Global South

-          contemporary development trends in international cities, including the diversity of dynamics in different urban contexts

-          functions and morphologies of urbanization processes or specific buildings as well as architectural questions on different spatial scales

-          Overview of the institutional landscape, facts and figures as well as contemporary trends in the international development cooperation.

-          Strategies, instruments and project approached of national and international actors and institutions

-          challenges, methodological approaches and case studies of integrated regional development

-          Key aspects of the Agenda 2030 “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” SDGs with focus on SDG 11 “Sustainable Cities and Communities”

-          Methods and tools such as Project Cycle Management and Logical Framework Approach, Monitoring, Evaluation and Impact Measurement

-          Insight into concrete project examples of development cooperation and participatory community work in Uganda and Ethiopia
