After successful completion of the course, students are able to...
... to understand contemporary concepts of "environment" and "world-making", which offer alternatives to current paradigms - especially of the binary relationship between nature and culture - both theoretically and concretely, in current discourses on the built environment
... to critically question traditional planner perspectives and to understand the built environment as a complex ecosystem of countless organisms which are interwoven and experience and shape urban space from a wide variety of different perspectives
... to abandon the anthropocentric view of cities and open it up to non-human environments
... apply artistic mapping methods and create mappings that go beyond traditional maps
In the design excercise "From a critical bird's eye view", we want to decenter the anthropocentric perspectives of planners with artistic-conceptual mappings and focus on the mapping of the urban space in the Volkertviertel (2nd district) from the perspective of birds and their living environments. In vage of the climatic and ecological challenges in cities, we want to practice this change of perspective, which leads to a new form of representation of reality and thus to the empowerment of alternative forms of world design – and therefore architecture. Just as mappings depict realities, they also create realities.
This design excercise will take place together with high school students of the subject Biology at BRG/BORG II in Lessinggasse.
This course is part of the initiative of the annual theme 2023/24 "Transformation of the Inventory". Further information of all participating courses can be found under the following link: https://futurelab.tuwien.ac.
Furthermore, the course is part of the FFG-funded project "HOPE Space Laboratory # Educational Landscapes in Climate Change". In the course of the four-year research project, the construction and operation of a mobile, modular, co-creatively planned and implemented spatial laboratory for artistic initiatives and experiments on climate protection and climate change adaptation will be carried out.
