After successful completion of the course, students are able to

• develop a clearly defined scientific question (WHAT?)
• define the methodical procedure to answer the research question (HOW?)
• articulate the professional relevance of a research question (WHY?)
• place the research project in the context of existing research (what is my contribution?)

The seminar aims at supporting diploma theses that investigate social reality around architecture/building/housing preferably with qualitative methods of empirical social research (surveys, interviews, participant observation etc.). In 4 sessions (3 workshops and 1 short symposium), students are introduced to the standards of good scientific practice and have the opportunity to develop their thesis projects in terms of content and methodology (rough concept, exposé, various stages of elaboration); the diploma project is concretized, presented and discussed. In addition, a poster presentation with input from experts takes place at a half-day symposium. There are separate working groups for advertised focus topics (see call "Shared Spaces, Commons and Community Spaces").

Preparation of an Exposé of at least 5 pages including:

1.     Research question - what do I want to find out?
2.     Relevance of the research question - why is it of scientific and/or practical importance?
3.     description of the methodological approach to achieve the goal
4.     preliminary table of contents of the thesis
5.     short description of the planned chapters
